Herbs Contraindicated During Pregnancy

This may not be a complete list but it contains most herbs that should be avoided.

Contraindicated during pregnancy due to the stress they place on the kidneys.

  • Juniper berries
  • Horsetail/Shave Grass
  • Buchu

Should be avoided until the last 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Squaw Vine (Mitchella repens)
  • Blue Cohosh (Caulophyflum thalicotroides)
  • Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)

Too strong for pregnancy

  • Pennyroyal
  • False Unicorn Root (Helonias dioica)
  • Dong Quai (Angelica spp)

Because it can lower prolactin levels, is best discontinued during the last trimester of pregnancy

  • Chaste tree

  • nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
  • cotton root (Gossypium herbaccum)
  • male fern (Dryopteris felix-mas)
  • thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
  • calendula (Calendula officinalis)
  • beth root (Trillium erectum)
  • feverfew (Chrysanthemum parthenium)
  • sage (Salvia officinalis)
