Here is an article that I found while researching eye problems for a friend. I have used these suggestions for more than a few folks and found that she is correct. So if you have problems and maybe even if you do not – you may want to read this. I do not use cosmetics but I discovered that shampoos are doing this for my friends.
I have also discovered that this may be a direct connection to why so many people are having trouble with thinning hair. (besides needing to eat a better diet) So read on and then check your shampoos!
The Bottom Line
If you value your health and life, choose products carefully. Avoiding certain ingredients might be more urgent than you think.
This year has been a year of great discovery to me. I have learned that I have had my first intense reaction to a body care product from a particular company.
I have learned that I can survive for a few months without makeup. I have learned that many people I know have developed eye problems. I have also learned what it is like to be one of them.
WHY I AM WRITING THIS REVIEW
You might be wondering why I am writing this review. Quite frankly, what I have to say is so sobering that I am hoping that I can help some others avoid this horrible problem that many of us out here have been experiencing.
For the last few years, I have been extremely concerned by the majority of women I have known or met talking to me about severe eye problems that they have been having. Watery eyes all day, bone dry eyeballs at night, raw skin around the eyes, mucus in the eyes- the list goes on and on.
My own mother has had to wear colored glasses on and off for a few years because her eyes were getting so bad that she could not wear makeup and the redness of the skin around them made her embarrassed.
I have been increasingly concerned about this trend, but my concern level was raised considerably when I began to develop similar problems that would not go away. For six months, I spent most of my days dabbing my eyes with tissues, rubbing itchy lids, and waking up at night, only to have my lids stick to my eyeballs, making it impossible to see until the liquid would start flowing again.
I knew what all of my friends and mother had been told by the area doctors- wash around the eye lids with baby shampoo- a practice widely recommended, with eye-popping results. PAIN!
I had watched so many people get medicines that would do nothing, go through tons of expense to no avail in the end for their condition. There are many names for this “trend” which most medical people will claim is “incurable”. Blepharitis is one of those names. I did not know what to do, but I knew it had to be different than what all of the others were doing. They were not getting better. I knew that there had to be something we could do.
THE BATH AND BODY CONNECTION
By the time I got into winter, I was beside myself. My eyes would clear up a little bit, but then a few days later, they would be worse than ever. I had not been wearing makeup at all, and I had stopped using the allergy prone eyeshadow which caused my problems months earlier.
To make myself feel better, I decided to step up the skincare regimen. After all, if I could not wear makeup, I would make my hair and skin feel better. Unfortunately, the opposite was happening. My eyes were getting so bad that I could not stand it any more.
I began to do some research. What I found out was so upsetting that I found it hard to fathom at first. When I began to look up eye problems , I began to find all kinds of things that shook me up. You see, I ended up in some journals and articles of a medical nature that talked easily about all of the wonderful things that you can do to heal the eyes.
They would refer to a certain proposed solution or prescription, heralding that animals that had been contaminated with SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATES to give them BLEPHARITIS, PSORIASIS, SKIN DISORDERS, EYE PROBLEMS, all had great results when given certain medicines to remedy the problem.
I sat and stared at the words in front of me. Surely, I must be imagining such stupidity could be in medical articles. Sadly, I wasn’t.
I ran into the bathroom and checked all of my shampoo, body washes, shower gels, face washes, and even toothpastes, and was horrified. The first ingredients on the label of most of these products was SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE!! All of them had it at one point or another in the list even if it was later in the list.
As I did further research on this topic, what I found made me so furious that I found it hard to contain myself.
Want to know some symptoms of SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE on human bodies? Eye diseases, skin disorders of all kinds- most of those typical skin diseases fall into this category, falling out of hair, lung damage if inhaled in heated form, inability of skin to replenish its oils, corrosive affect on flesh. Those are just the ones that come to mind as I write this.
The more research I did on this, the angrier I got. The approval of this ingredient in all of our body washes and products is approved by the FDA, but it is cumulative in the body and is listed as hazardous on the data sheets that the US gov. puts out on chemicals. In a study of the human eye, you will see that there are several layers that keep the eyeball working. The first is oil, the second tears, and the third is mucus.
SLS (for the sake of brevity, I will use initials) is a corrosive de-greaser. They use it to clean garage floors. They also use it to give animals all kinds of eye and skin diseases so they can test medicines on them. It has been known to retard growth and development of eyeballs in young children. It has been linked to cancer, cataracts, and baldness.
Know anyone with alopecia? How about that shedding you thought was normal in the winter time of your hair? Rashes that come out only in wintertime? SLS keeps the skin so stripped that it can not maintain its own moisture level from the oils it is supposed to use to keep skin healthy.
WHAT IS SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE FROM?
Just to let you know, SLS is a derivative of coconuts that is married with petroleum by-products that bring forth a caustic by-product that is used in our body washes, shampoos (including baby shampoo, which has numbing agents in it to make kids not feel the damage being done), facial washes, toothpastes, hair mousse, even shaving gels.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THIS?
As my research progressed, I became more and more upset. I had just purchased shampoos and body washes to last for over a year. Suddenly, I was going to have to start all over. My daughter had been complaining that she had been itching constantly for months, and my husband was upset because he was losing his hair.
I had noticed my hair getting bad in addition to my skin being in horrible condition. For hours after a shower, I would itch terribly.
I began to search for products to use in the shower that did not have these ingredients in them, or anything that resembled them. After a long search, I managed to find several product lines that did not have SLS products in them. We replaced our body washes with non-SLS products, as well as our shampoos, facial washes, and toothpaste.
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WE REMOVED SLS FROM OUR SHOWER?
Let me tell you, the change in our family since we eliminated SLS and related products from our shower repertoire has been drastic.
No more itching
Hair loss stopped
Tooth Sensitivity went down. Gums stopped bleeding.
Dry Skin is easily remedied with lotion ONCE a day instead of constantly.
Cracked skin has begun to heal.
Eyes are improving daily.
Bonus- my hair looks and feels better than it did with my beloved, now extinct VS volumizing products. I thought that would NEVER be possible! All of our hair looks amazing with no bad hair days so far!
HOW SHOULD YOU CHOOSE BODY GEL OR WASH?
You can do what I did after reading this essay about SLS and what it does to your body. You can shrug it off and convince yourself that it is just a sensitivity and that you do not have any problem with it. I thought that too. Some years ago I began to find out a little about this kind of thing, but I got lazy and just decided to continue to play russian roulette with my family’s health and well being. I finally got the bullet though. I only wish I had not waited so long until I did something about it.
If you are going to get a body wash or gel you want to avoid all versions of SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE or anything that resembles it.
A WORD OF CAUTION HERE. MANY NATURAL PRODUCT LINES HAVE DECIDED TO SHIRK UNDER THE LINE OF ATTACK AGAINST THESE INGREDIENTS BY USING A NEWLY DEVELOPED VERSION OF SLS CALLED SODIUM MYRETH SULFATE.
When I bought a few of these things after being assured that they were not the same, I was very angry with these well known natural product companies. SODIUM MYRETH SULFATE caused everyone in my family and that I tested it on MORE problems than SLS did. Itching was unbearable. My son who did not even react severely to SLS was in misery with SMS.
If you are concerned about this like I am, you can rest assured that there are a few products out there that are very concerned about customer safety.
One company that I have found to be refreshing in this day of a quick buck at the expense of the health and life of many is AUBREY ORGANICS. They have been around for years, and they have all kinds of body care and hair care products with no damaging chemicals in them.
You can reach them at www.aubrey-organics.com
Our hair has never looked better, or our skin felt better.
Another line of products for shower wash is DR. BRONNER’S CASTILE SOAP. Very nice on the skin, it does not dry it out and smells nice in certain fragrances. I am not sure if they have a web site.
Some bar soap is also excellent. Sallyeanders soaps makes some great shower gel substitues in bar soap. Goat milk soap etc. They can be reached at www.sallyeander.com
CLOSING COMMENTS
I urge you to be very serious when choosing a bath or shower gel. Baby products especially are very rough on small children unless they do not have these serious chemicals in them. There is a reason that most suffers of eye problems like blepharitis are in the late 30′s and early 40′s when they develop it.
Read labels carefully.
I have had several people in the last week ask me about my quest to find out about body washes and gels and when I describe my situation to them, they will look at me like a drink of water in a desert.
They felt so alone and did not know what to do- they were suffering severely like I was. And I am happy to say that every one of them that took my advice seriously have experience dramatic improvement in just a week or so.
I will try to update this essay as I find out more about this topic, but I urge you to do a search online. Until I compose a list of links, here is what you can do a search on….
Look for:
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE
LAURETH SULFATE
MYRETH SULFATE
SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE
BLEPHARITIS
DERMATITIS
That will be good for a start.
If you happen to be a sufferer like I was, hang on, if you take this step in choosing body products, you will be well on your way to recovery- at least to some degree.
JUST IN CASE YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Oh, and in case you are wondering, JASON’S NATURAL PRODUCTS makes a toothpaste without SLS in it, however, they have decided to include SMS in most of their other products, so be cautious.
You will also want to look for a dish liquid that does not have SLS in it, which will be more difficult, but ECOVER has one and there are a few others.
Once we stopped using SLS and related products, we tested them again and could not believe the difference. We can now feel how severely harsh they are, now that we are not using them anymore regularly. Even the toothpaste is a very interesting difference.
————————————-
Because several people have asked me, I am including this list at the end of various body washes, and related products that I have tried so far. Some of these have been through sample sizes, and others have been at great introductory rates that were half price or less. Also a couple of companies have small sizes you can purchase for only a dollar or two to try so you are not investing a huge amount in products until you find something you want.
I have included shampoo in this list as many women and men I have talked with about this tell me that they use their shampoos as facial and body washes as well.
I hope to move this list to another location at some time in the future.
LIST OF PRODUCTS I HAVE TRIED SO FAR
SHAMPOO
J.A.Y. DESERT HERB SHAMPOO – Aubrey Organics, the best shampoo I have ever used. Better than VS volumizing, works on ANY type hair from the most frizzy dry and thick to thin and baby fine. Suds very little, but cleans beautifully. Smells like balsam and cedarwood. I find that it works best when I use conditioner only once or twice a month with this shampoo. The more I use this, the better it gets.www.aubrey-oraganics.com
NATURAL BABY & KIDS SHAMPOO- Aubrey Organics, excellent kids shampoo. Remember, no shampoo is no-tears. That was a gimmick for a certain brand which included numbing agents in the shampoo so kids did not feel damage. Makes hair shiny and bouncy. Smells like traditional baby powder. One of the best shampoos we have used. Great for all types of hair. I find that no need for conditioner except on very dry hair.
ALOE ESSENCE – Aubrey Organics, Have tried 3 of the 4 in this line. Oily, Dry, Damaged versions. Excellent cleansers, suds little, shiny hair, not particularly volumizing, which I need. Still great for hot weather use when you just want CLEAN fresh hair. Various fragrances for each type.
RICE PROTEIN VOLUMIZING SHAMPOO Lamas Beauty International, great volumizer, but not as wave inducing as I like. Leaves hair very thick and smells nice, but not one of my favorites. Peach and Sake smell. www.lamasbeauty.com
TRIPLE TREAT SHAMPOO Giovanni Organic Hair Care, Excellent cleanser, smells invigorating, strong minty-tea tree scent. Makes hair shiny and clean, not thickening, but volumizing slightly. Also works beautifully if your family is afflicted with lice. ( Use with full strength vinegar rinse for that problem.) One of my favorites for summer when I have to wash my hair often and do not care about demanding style. www.giovannicosmetics.com
GOLDEN WHEAT SHAMPOO Giovanni Organic Hair Care. For oily hair. Great cleanser, leaves hair shiny and clean, not volumizing. Light Minty smell, more like spearmint.
50:50 Shampooo Giovanni Organic Hair Care. For normal to dry hair. Excellent cleansing shampoo. Not volumizing. Does not build up on fine hair, but does not make it look fuller either. Leaves very clean and full as it naturally is.
MAGNETIC SHAMPOO Giovanni Organic Hair Care. Not a fantastic shampoo, but interesting and fun. Liquid silver color and is a good shampoo. I would not say it was anything extravagant like the advertising suggests. Still a good cleanser.
THIN TO THICK Jason Natural Cosmetics. I am including this only so that you will keep an eye on this stuff. The best thickening shampoo out there, but has SODIUM MYRETH SULFATE in it. Jason’s will probably change ingredients if enough people complain (which I did LOUD AND CLEAR). If you are interested in this shampoo or want to make your voice heard, call Jasons and ask for Serena. She told me that they are interested in knowing what customers want. 1-877-JASON-01
FACIAL WASHES AND SHOWER GELS
Avalon Facial Cleansing Milk AVALON ORGANIC BOTANICALS. Best facial cleanser out there for me. Can use with care around eyes, but not in them. No suds, which irritates when my lids have an itchy spell. Lavender base.
WATCH OUT FOR AVALON’S OTHER PRODUCTS. THEY HAVE INDICATED TO ME THAT THEY ARE NOT CONCERNED WITH OUR REACTIONS TO SMS AND THEIR RESPONSE TO MY UPSETNESS WITH THEIR COMPANY IN INCLUDING IT IN THEIR NEW PRODUCTS WAS A 20% DISCOUNT ON MORE PRODUCTS!!!! I orginally wrote them furious because they have recently changed to using SMS without telling anyone so my order based on their ingredient list ended up coming with their new ingredients which includes SMS.
www.avalonnaturalproducts.com
FACE AND BODY WASH -Lamas Beauty International- www.lamasbeauty.com. Excellent facial wash. Cleans makeup off beautifully, including eye makeup that is waterproof. Better than any other makeup remover I have tried. However, on days of itchy lids, I have to follow up with using this to remove makeup by using the AVALON FACIAL CLEANSING MILK to calm my skin down. Does not happen as often now as my eyes improve. Also excellent for body use. Very concentrated.
AVALON LAVENDER BATH & SHOWER GEL Avalon Organic Botanicals. Great shower gels- all of the fragrances of these are the same except for the fragrance. Unfortunately, after dealing with the company and their disregard for me as a consumer, I have to warn you to read their labels constantly. They are changing many of their products to include SMS without warning. So far, this green bottle version is excellent, but WATCH THEM LIKE A HAWK.
TOOTHPASTE
SEA FRESH PLUS Jason Natural Cosmetics. Spearmint flavor, excellent cleansing without stripping. CoQ10 and Fluoride in it also. Gums stopped bleeding when using this for a while. Great stuff. Taste surprisingly good! They have won awards for three years for this stuff and how it tastes.
NUTRISMILE PLUS Jason Natural Cosmetics. ORange Cinnamint flavor. Youngsters like this better. Same wonderful cleaning, flavor is great. They have won awards for this flavor against 10 top national brands according to their web site. www.jason-natural.com
That is a good list to start with. There are reasons why some of the well known natural brands of shampoos and body washes are not up there. Most of them are using the SLS or SMS chemicals in them now.
